MUSIC VIDEO

Our music video was a pop hybrid between performance and narrative.

               Performance                                             Narrative

We chose this style because we wanted the video to tell a story to the audience and make it visually appealing at the same time. In a way we also wanted to audience to feel a connection between them and the characters in the video.

The story was these two people in the video lost their radio job and you see them trashing the radio room. It was also conventional that pop music videos consist of dance and as our target audience responded in the questionnaire that they wanted dance we chose to have edits of a choreographed dance outside almost showing how happy that these people are and how they can have fun after leaving their job. Within our music video we used a choreographed dance that was filmed from multiple angles, and was edited with multiple cross cuts. Therefore the dance went from different locations and was explored with different camera angles. We did this so that the audience would see it as visually appealing. Also we thought that this was a good contrast from the narrative style of our music video.

Additionally, to contrast this we also incorporated close ups shots of the singers lip syncing some with direct address to the audience and some with non. We thought that this would be benefit our style as the by having this close up lip syncing made it feel like the singer/characters of the story were speaking directly them the audience.

We also used the convention of costume to show a divide between the hybrid of performance and narrative. For the majority of the lip syncing in the music video they artists are wearing a blue sparkly dress and a blue sparkly suit, while in the narrative clips they are wearing more casual clothes. The male is wearing a black and white top with a black and white hat, and the female is wearing jeans, a top and a jacket.

Nevertheless, in the video there are a few shots for example in which there is lip syncing in the costume that is mainly used for the narrative part of the video. This is because half way through we wanted there to be a point in which she is singing in order to connect the two categories together so that the audience are aware that they are linked.

In the music video all the sections in which the artists are lip syncing is showing them telling a story and everything else is their memories. We wanted to show the narrative style of the dance showing their celebration by playing a vhr filter over. This made it look like an old recording, almost representing an old memory. Also to show this in the scenes where they are running into the office and ripping up papers, the clips jump cut a lot. This is because we wanted to show that their memories may be jumping around as what happens when you remember things. Additionally, the cuts were also visually pleasing for the audience as it suit the beat of the song.

We chose this style because we wanted to attract the target audience which for our music video was both genders between the ages of 15-19 andl all in which have an interest in pop music. Perhaps pushing the age down to 13 after reviewing the final product. Our secondary audiences would be males who are from the LGBTQ community and are looking to feel accepted in music. Therefore we chose the hybrid style as we thought this is something that would be appealing to this age group.

I believe that as a group we represented our chosen artists very well because the music video promotes that not all males need to be masculine and that it is ok to where makeup and like stereotypical feminine colours. This is evident in our music video by our male artist wearing a full face of makeup and heels.  As well as this it promotes that there is good in everything and that you can rise up even if something bad happens and this is shown in through the whole narrative of the music video.

We would like our target audience to interpret this representation by feeling inspired that they can be who they want to be and that if anything bad happens in life they can get up and have fun as they can see the people in the music video having fun by the conventions such as editing, mise-en-scene and camera.
